No Rooftop Needed| Holy Hygge Marriage

There is a Proverb in the Bible that states “Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.” (Proverbs 21:9 NIV)  Other translations read as contentious, brawling, and  nagging woman but one translation really caught my attention: the Brenton Septuagint Translation that reads “It is better to dwell in a corner on the house-top, than in plastered rooms with unrighteousness, and in an open house.” Unrighteousness. That sums it all up in one very powerful word. To be a wife that puts her own pride above the covenant and teachings of Christ is to be an unrighteous woman.

I can hear the rebuttals comings: what about the husband? What if he is quarrelsome? What if I don’t feel he deserves better treatment because he doesn’t treat me the way I want to be treated? Why is it always the woman who has to stand firm while he does what he wants?  My sweet sisters, these are all conditional questions that feed into our own self seeking outcomes instead of our identity in Christ. It is time to ask one question of ourselves: what if I choose to love instead of quarrel?  Love covers a multitude of sins my friends. (1 Peter 4:8) When we choose love an amazing thing begins to happen. We begin to see changes in our spouse, but more importantly we begin to see ourselves in our true identity and our Father Yahuah, the King of Kings, is so very proud of His daughters. Isn’t that really what we are all seeking? Our Father’s approval and blessing in our lives? that approval begins with one choice. The choice to love.

To live in the concept of hygge is to desire a space of contentment and peace. A place of warmth and coziness that both husband and wife can enjoy. We, as wives, can make our homes a sacred holy hygge space for ourselves and our spouses by living in our true identity in Christ and leaving the worldly identities behind. A husband who comes home to a wife who is content, peaceful and has the home exuding warmth and comfort will very unlikely be a husband who is discontented and seeking to be outside the home. There are, of course, situations where this may not be the case, but as a woman after the True God’s heart we can live in peace whether our spouse does or not because we have chosen to live righteously. If a husband cannot find peace in a home filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit, then the issue is no longer the wife.

This is the beginning of my new blog series Holy Hygge in the Marriage. As I move forward with my book No Rooftop Needed : creating an atmosphere of peace and contentment in your marriage and your home I will continue to share the spaces the Spirit takes me on this journey to holy hygge in my marriage and hope to hear that it has somehow blessed you in yours!!
