The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.
The Cambridge dictionary describes compassion as a strong feeling of sympathy and sadness for the suffering or bad luck of others and a wish to help them. Compassion comes naturally to us women, yet when it comes to our husbands we often find it difficult to remain in a sympathetic state, especially during times of disappointment.
As wives we can often be on the receiving end of our husbands let downs, aggravations and stressors. It is not fair. It is very hurtful and often it can hinder our ability to seek an understanding of why he just came home from work and began arguing for no apparent reason. But……As Godly wives it IS what we should do.
We are made in God’s image and we are meant to live out our lives as godly as we possibly can. God is slow to anger. So must we be. God is gracious and compassionate. So must we be.
To be compassionate in a godly manner is to live with the same feelings and difficulties our husbands are having. It is to meet him where he is in that moment and give him grace. It is to remain calm and to show him love in the midst of his trial.
This is difficult, especially in the heat of the moment. Recently my husband came home and immediately started an argument over literally everything he could think of. I initially responded in love and grace. He didn’t accept it and the conversation escalated and become heated. I reacted in anger and thought ugly thoughts. None of us can perfectly respond as God would, but when I calmed down and gave God my focus he reminded me that apologies are gateways to forgiveness and peace and peacemakers are blessed.
Long story short, I humbled myself, apologized for my lack of compassion, the gates to peace opened back up and communication revealed that my husband had been under immense pressure at work. His acting out toward me when he got home was not godly. It was not even acceptable but I am not called to be his judge. I am called to compassion, love and forgiveness.
I am called to be a holy beautiful wife and each day I work harder to meet that goal.
My prayer for us all is that we can live out true compassion with our husbands. that we can seek a godly response in an ungodly world. I believe we can encourage each other here and I am so happy you have joined us !!!
